About Word.ws

Word.ws is a free English dictionary. Every page shows the meanings of one word, how to say it, its forms, where it comes from and the words around it.

For word games

Word.ws is also handy for Scrabble, crosswords and other word games. Browse words that start with any letters, check that a word exists and see what it means before you play it. Word.ws follows Wiktionary, not an official tournament word list, so a word here may still be refused in a rated game.

Where the definitions come from

All definitions, pronunciations, word forms and origins on Word.ws come from Wiktionary, the free dictionary written by volunteers. Word.ws uses the English entries from the Wiktionary data of 2026-09-02, extracted with Wiktextract and published by kaikki.org.

Each word page links to the Wiktionary page it was adapted from and to that page's history, which lists its authors.

License

The dictionary text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International license. You may copy and adapt it, including for commercial use, as long as you credit Wiktionary and share your changes under the same license.

Word.ws changed the entries by reformatting them, grouping them by part of speech, adding links between words and showing the definitions of the base word on pages for word forms such as plurals and past tenses.

If a definition is wrong, the best fix is on Wiktionary itself: open the source link at the bottom of the word page and edit it there. Corrections reach Word.ws when the dictionary is rebuilt.
