Origin of Gaza

Borrowed from Latin Gaza, borrowed from Ancient Greek Γάζα (Gáza), borrowed from Biblical Hebrew עַזָּה (ʕazzɔ̂). The Greek form of the Septuagint reflects the older Hebrew pronunciation with /ɣ~ʁ/, a phoneme that later merged with /ʕ/.

The founder of the Gaza Empire, Soshangane, named it after his grandfather Gasa kaLanga. The region, district, and province, are named after the empire. The people are named after the region.
