Meaning of null hypothesis
Noun
null hypothesis (plural null hypotheses)
- A hypothesis set up to be nullified or refuted in order to support an alternative hypothesis. When used, the null hypothesis is presumed true until statistical evidence in the form of a hypothesis test indicates otherwise. Therefore, the null and the alternative hypothesis must be mutually exclusive and exhaustive.
- A two proportion z-test allows for a comparison of two proportions, with the null hypothesis being that they are the same.2021 April, Jenna Birnbohm-Kaminski, “A Study of Undergraduate Major on the Youth Electorate within the Bryant Community”, in Bryant University, archived from the original on 21 May 2023, page 11
