oh my god particle

Proper noun

Oh-My-God particle (plural Oh-My-God particles)

1. An ultra-high-energy cosmic ray detected in 1991, of uncertain nature, which exceeds the GZK limit; the highest energy particle ever discovered.
   • Similarly, the Oh-My-God particle had no discernible source. Scientists suggest this could indicate a much larger magnetic deflection than predicted, an unidentified source in the Local Void, or an incomplete understanding of high-energy particle physics.2023 November 24, Hannah Devlin, “‘What the heck is going on?’ Extremely high-energy particle detected falling to Earth”, in The Guardian, →ISSN, archived from the original on 08 Jan 2025
