Origin of Uzbek

Borrowed from Russian узбе́к (uzbék), borrowed from Uzbek oʻzbek. First attested in 1616. Further etymology is uncertain; possibly from Turkic öz (“genuine”) + Eastern Iranian Sogdian [script needed] (βγ /beġ/, “master”); the latter from Proto-Indo-Aryan *bʰagás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰagás. The first element is often thought to be equivalent to English Oghuz.
